- How may I register for the course?
You may register in one of two ways.

2. Print our FMIT Registration Form, fill it out manually, then fax or mail it back to Language Link.

- What are some of the prerequisites for the FMIT course?
  • You need to be 18 years of age or older.
  • Have a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Be fluently bilingual (be able to speak, read and write in English and in the target language you speak)
  • Be employed by a medical, clinical or human service organization that provides services to MassHealth members. (e.g., hospital, health center, nursing home, assisted living facility, etc.)
  • Successfully pass the language assessment component with a grade of 75 or higher. (The test includes an evaluation of both written and oral proficiency in English and the target language.)

- Is there a registration deadline?
 Yes, Registration deadline will be 2 weeks prior to orientation day. Please refer to the 'Announcements' section of our website for information on class dates. 

- What should I expect on Orientation Day?
On Orientation Day participants will be administered a Language Assessment Test. Participants must pass the L.A.T with a score of 75 or higher in order to be eligible for enrollment. During Orientation the program director will conduct an overview of  the Medical Interpreter Training program and will take questions from participants.

- What kind of test will be administered to registered participants?
The test will compose of Medical Terminology & Anatomy. The Language Assessment Test has two components, a written and oral component. During the 'oral' part of the exam, participants will be asked to interpret whole sentences and paragraphs from English to their target language. A digital recording device will be used on participants during this phase of the exam.

(Language Link is not providing additional information on the Language Assessment Test. Language Link advises all interested participants to study Basic Medical Terminology & Anatomy.)

- How much does the course cost?

  • $280 for participants that are employed, or volunteer at a medical, clinical or human service organization that provides services to MassHealth members (e.g., hospitals, healthcare centers, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc). A letter from employer is required. ($30 test fee and $250 training fee)
  • $880 for participants who do not work for a medical/clinical organization serving the designated percentage of MassHealth consumers ($30 test fee and $850 training fee)
- When & where will the course be held?
Please refer to the 'Announcements' section of our website for up-to-date information. If you have already filled our Online FMIT Registration Form you will be notified by courier mail, or by email.

- How long does the course last?
The Medical Interepreter Training course is held for 20 weeks; class meets one night a week for 3.25 hours. Total accumulation of hours included in the FMIT Program is 60. (Students will be given a 15-minute break during each class)

- Will I need to buy a book for the course?
Yes, students are required to purchase a Medical Terminology Text Book for the cost of $60. You may purchase the book from Language Link or purchase it at Amazon.com.

- Will I get a certificate?
Yes, upon successfully completing all requirements students will receive a Certificate of Completion from Central Mass. AHEC's Language Link Division of the Medical Interpreter Training Program.

- Will make-up sessions be available for missed classes?
Yes, students will be given the opportunity to make-up any class they may have missed during the semester. However, students who miss more than one class will not receive a Certificate of Completion on graduation day. Students must make-up ALL missed classes before been awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Important! Please be aware that Language Link holds classes in different towns and cities within the state of Massachusetts; therefore, make-up sessions for missed classes may be held outside of Worcester,MA.

- Does Language Link provide job placement after graduation?
No, Language Link does not currently provide this service.

- Are additional trainings or workshops available?
Yes, workshops are often available for continuing education in the field. Please refer to the 'Announcements' section of our website for workshops that may be held by Language Link or any of its partners.
