AmeriCorps Healthy Aging Program
Overview
Central MA Area Health Education Center, Inc. (CM AHEC) is pleased to offer the AmeriCorps Healthy Aging Program! AmeriCorps is a national network of programs that engages more than 70,000 Americans each year in volunteer service to meet the critical needs of communities throughout the nation.
Our Healthy Aging Program is designed to engage older adults (aged 55+) in meaningful volunteer service that will improve the health of their peers in Central Massachusetts.
AmeriCorps members are trained to provide health education and supporting activities to seniors host sites throughout Central Massachusetts. CM AHEC provides an orientation session and a series of comprehensive training units in the following evidence-based health programs:
- My Life, My Health (a chronic disease self-management program)
- A Matter of Balance (a fall management program)
- Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults
Once training is complete, AmeriCorps Members are will offer one or more of the Healthy Aging Programs to other older adults, as well as organize other health related activities such as walking groups or chronic disease support groups
CM AHEC offers AmeriCorps Members personal and professional development opportunities over the course of their service. In addition, AmeriCorps Members and host sited receive stipends to offset the cost they incur while participating in the program. AmeriCorps Members that complete program requirements are eligible for an education award at the end of their service period.
